During the 36 years represented by this chart, Total Bank Deposits grew from $600 Billion to $7,400 Billion, while Transaction Deposits grew from $320 Billion to $700 Billion. The diamonds and squares with the adjacent percentages indicate estimates of reserve requirements for Transaction and Non-transaction accounts respectively.
Changes in reserve requirements have contributed a major impetus to the growth in Total Bank Deposits and to the shift into Non-transaction deposits.
The chart above presents the same data as the preceding chart in semi-log scale. The semi-log scale gives a better picture of growth rates.
